The first phase of a large-scale genomics research project on the mountain pine beetle (MPB) epidemic has been jointly funded by Genome British Columbia and Genome Alberta in western Canada.

Since the MPB epidemic is a disease system involving the interaction of three genomes, the name "tria" was chosen - meaning "three" in both Greek and Latin.
